Biography
Susan Bloomfield’s research interests focus on the integrative physiology of bone, with specific reference to skeletal adaptations to disuse, microgravity, caloric deficiency, and inflammation. A frequent member of NASA advisory panels, Bloomfield currently serves on two Institute of Medicine committees advisory to NASA. Since 2016, she has served as associate dean for research in the School of Education & Human Development, overseeing Research & Development Office staff and functions. Bloomfield is a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and in the National Academy of Kinesiology. Her research has been funded since 1997 by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, NASA, and Department of Defense. She has authored or co-authored 64 scholarly papers and contributed a chapter to the book, Novel Findings in Bone Biology: Impact on Bone Health for Women (Springer New York, 2013). She earned a bachelor’s in biology at Oberlin College, a master’s in physical education at the University of Iowa and her Ph.D. in exercise physiology at The Ohio State University.
