Anderson is a professor and extension economist for livestock and food product marketing in the Department of Agricultural Economics. Anderson’s extension program involves analyzing livestock market economics and policy, evaluating how market trends influence prices and policy surrounding agricultural products.
About David Anderson
Dr. David Anderson’s work focuses on some of the most important issues facing Texas and U.S. livestock producers, including the impact of ethanol on food and feed, country of origin labeling, immigration and agricultural labor, animal identification, the structure of livestock markets, milk pricing, fever ticks, market price analysis, technology adoption and improving farmers’ and ranchers’ marketing abilities. For the past 15 years, he has taught Agricultural Economics (AGEC 614) and has authored or coauthored more than 600 journal articles, extension publications, symposiums, presented papers, popular press and other articles. Over his career, he has chaired or co-chaired 19 graduate student research committees and served on 51 other graduate student committees.
Additional Career Information
Anderson was elected and served as chair of the American Agricultural Economics Association Extension Section in 2014-15. Additionally, he has received awards from the American, Western and Southern Agricultural Economics Associations, the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Texas A&M AgriLife Superior Service awards for quality of extension and research programs. His efforts have garnered more than $10 million in grant and contract funding over his career.

2021 Single-Commodity versus Joint Hedging in Cattle Feeding Cycle: Is Joint Hedging Always Essential?
The paper analyzes the effectiveness of joint- versus single-commodity hedging for inputs and outputs of the cattle feeding cycle using the second-order lower partial moment (LPM2) as the risk measure. Joint hedging always results in higher hedging effectiveness than the single-commodity hedging, but the difference is often small. The difference in performance is found to be explained by the commodity price dependence measures (Kendall’s τ). Ranges of τ leading to substantial improvement in risk reduction due to joint hedging are identified. The joint hedging strategy is worth implementing when the observed price dependence measures fall within the identified ranges.
2020 Estimating COVID-19 Impacts on the Broiler IndustryJEL codes
The COVID-19 pandemic created massive disruptions in meat supply chains including the US poultry industry. Detrimental impacts to chicken demand due to restaurant closures led to supply adjustments affecting broiler producers. The integrated structure of the broiler industry creates significant challenges in estimating grower losses. Farmers who raise broiler chickens do not own the birds and price drops are not directly felt in the same manner as in other commodities. This article examines the broiler industry and presents methodology to better understand the farm-level impacts of COVID-19. Further, this work is useful for policy response considerations for broiler growers.
2019 The Texas Drilling Boom and Local Human Capital Investment
Researchers and citizens alike question the long-term impacts of the shale oil boom on local communities. Studies have considered the boom’s effects on employment, income, mobility, and human capital acquisition. This research specifically builds on research considering shale effects on secondary schooling. Using county-level data from Texas, we investigate two questions: (1) Has the latest oil boom led to a reduction in local high school graduation? (2) Is this effect different for immigrants, a group potentially vulnerable to local wage effects? Findings indicate insignificant overall effects; however, local oil drilling increases immigrant high school dropout rates.
